MacGyver Macro

Wed Sep 17, 2008, 1:53 PM
In honor of Deviant Appreciation Day, I'm going to share some simple, inexpensive tricks that I use to compensate for not being able to afford external flashes.

First, I don't have an external flash. I have to use the the built in one, which can be pretty bright. To correct this, I use a tissue and a rubber band. Just fold the tissue so it is double or triple thickness and attach it with the the rubber band. This works very well for diffusing the flash.

Second, when shooting macro, a long lens barrel or a lens + extension tubes, tends to block the flash from your subject. To correct this, I use a piece of aluminum foil. Just take a piece about 5x3 inches and hold it above your flash parallel with the lens barrel. You can also attach it to the flash along with the tissue paper if you need two hands.

Well, this is how I shoot macro with limited equipment. Give it try it works really well. The proof is right there to the left of this.

sometimes i put a soft light on things using a torch and a tissue.... it kinda works.

It works for some things, but I don't like how the light isn't even. I'm thinking an LED torch would give more even light.

that's the point of the tissue

I've tried it with a tissue, but it didn't help very much. I think I'll stick to the foil; it's a lot lighter than my flash light and gives me a bit more control.

fair enough. i think i'd use more than one technique depending on the situation.

Yeah, definitely. I think I'm going to start playing around with lighting. My roommate has a professional lighting kit and he said I can use when ever.

I would love to have my own studio. Our garage is blacked out, so it works out ok as a makeshift one.

we have a double garage. one half you cant get to because it has a trailer tent and a kayak and bikes and god knows what else in. the other half is for the car and has stuff on all the walls. the lighting is crap... its not practical. urgh... so closest i get is draping sheets or using the light to get a white or black bg
